Concert review - The Winery Dogs - The Tralf, Buffalo, NY July 5, 2016

Review and photos by John Jeffrey

Buffalo, NY - When The Winery Dogs took the last stage Tuesday night at the sold-out Tralf Music Hall in downtown 'B-lo,' I knew I was in store for a night of "BS."  When I say "BS," I am referring to the one and only, Billy Sheehan, Buffalo native and bass player extraordinaire.  It's always a special time when Billy returns to his home town, as fans, friends and followers literally come out of the woodwork to see the "Buffalo boy who done good."

Concert review - Buckcherry - Mooney's Concert Cove, Arkon, NY - July 5, 2016

Review / Photos by Thomas S. Orwat Jr.

Arkon, NY - It could have been one of those forgettable, phone-it-in nights for Anaheim, California rockers, Buckcherry, as a hastly arranged Tuesday evening show at a venue in the middle of nohwere, with an audience of barely 300, would cause most major bands to just go through the motions, and then get the hell out.  But, Buckcherry stood strong, showed their true colors, and gave the small, but ethusiastic crowd a great night of hard-hitting and sleazy rock n' roll.  Their 90-minute performance consisted of many of their hits, fan favorites, and a few off their new CD, 'Rock n' Roll.'

Concert review - Whitesnake, Whitford/St. Holmes - Artpark, Lewiston, NY - June 28, 2016

Review by John Jeffrey , photos Thomas S. Orwat Jr.

Lewiston, NY - Going into ArtPark for Rock Music Star's first show there - for the 2016 Summer concert season - I honestly did not know what to expect.  While the teaming up of some of rock's most legendary stalwarts: David Coverdale (Whitesnake), Brad Whitford (Aerosmith) and Derek St.Holmes (Ted Nugent) looked good on paper (as the latter two teamed up for a reunited version of Whitford/St.Holmes, as the duo opened the show), I wasn't necessarily convinced how well it would all translate into a great rock and roll show.

Pre-concert review - Whitesnake / Whitford-St Holmes - Artpark, Lewiston, NY June 28, 2016

When Whitesnake announced that they would tour the world this summer, WNY fans became ecstatic when a date at Lewiston's beautiful ArtPark concert venue was announced.  What they're calling a “Greatest Hits Tour,” began at the Riverwind Casino in Norman, OK, on June 1st.  They will tour across North America over the course of this month, before winding up the first leg on July 2 at the Mohegan Sun Poconos Casino in Wilkes-Barre, PA.  And they will wrap up the tour in Europe during the weekend of August 13-14, when they play the Alcatraz Festival in Courtrai, Belgium.

Last year, prior to the release of 'The Purple Album,' in which the current lineup of Whitesnake (featuring the recent addition of guitar monster Joel Hoekstra), recorded songs from front man David Coverdale‘s time in Deep Purple, Coverdale stated that he was thinking that within the next year or so, he would be announcing  “a farewell to the big rock stuff.”  So this upcoming show, could very well be the last WNY appearance for Whitesnake.

in 2015, when Whitesnake toured for 'The Purple Album,' it received a mixed bag of reviews, as the group played a combination of Whitesnake material and songs from Deep Purple's Mark III and Mark IV studio albums, as again, Coverdale was Deep Purple's front man from late 1973 to early 1976, and sang on the albums 'Burn,' 'Stormbringer' and 'Come Taste The Band.'  As longtime David Coverdale fans, and fans of that era of Deep Purple, enjoyed hearing the revamped versions of songs like "Soldier of Fortune," casual Whitesnake fans weren't as enthused with the tour's set list.

However, when Whitesnake rocks Lewiston on June 28th, 2016, being that this is their official "Greatest Hits" tour, you can expect to hear all the songs you know and love, like: “Is This Love,” Still of The Night” and "Here I Go Again."

Opening the show will be Whitford/ St. Holmes, which is the side project of Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford and Ted Nugent band vocalist/guitarist Derek St.Holmes. Both musicians are extremely talented and greatly responsible for the success of both Aerosmith and Ted Nugent, respectively. The dynamic duo just released their second record, 'Reunion' on June 3rd. This release really showcases Whitford's guitar talents and St. Holmes great vocal abilities. Get to Artpark early, you don't want to miss Whitford/ St. Holmes.

Tickets for this show are still available and can be purchased by clicking here.

Interview - ZZ Top - Billy Gibbons

By Thomas S. Orwat Jr.

ZZ Top is one of the most recognizable and iconic bands in world.  The dynamic Texan-trio has virtually remained the same since it's inception in 1969, with Billy F. Gibbons - guitar/vocals, Dusty Hill - bass/vocals, and Frank Beard - drums.  With countless sold-out world tours, and over 25 million total units of music sold in the USA alone, the band shows no signs of slowing down.

ZZ Top will be releasing their first official live album, ‘Greatest Hits Live,' on August 12th, on Suretone Records.  The band is will also be touring all summer long, including a date on August 23rd, at Darien Lake PAC, Darien, NY, with Gregg Allman opening.  Tickets can be purchased by clicking here.

What follows is an exclusive RMS interview with a guitarist with the nastiest tone in rock, Billy F. Gibbons!  During this interview, Billy discusses his involvement with the Supersonic Blues Machine, his 2015 solo release, and his memories of opening for Jimi Hendrix with his pre-ZZ Top band, The Moving Sidewalks.
