BY THOMAS S. ORWAT, JR.

Welcome to Episode #106 of the Rock Interview Series. For this feature, rock music legend Chris Slade is the guest. Slade was the drummer for many legendary bands including AC/DC, The Firm featuring Jimmy Page and Paul Rogers, Uriah Heep, ASIA, Gary Moore, and the Manfred Mann’s Earth Band.

In this episode, Chris talks about his new record with The Chris Slade’s Timeline entitled “Timescape,” set to release on July 19th on Bravewords Records. This release can be ordered at this link https://bravewordsrecords.com/

During the interview, Slade passionately discussed the irreplaceable talent and influence of Malcolm Young, the late rhythm guitarist and leader of AC/DC. He shared, “Malcolm Young was a genius guitarist, the best rhythm guitarist I’ve ever worked with in 60 years. There’s nobody like him. He can never be replaced. Stevie does a pretty good job, but what made Malcolm so good was his impeccable timing, fantastic tone, and incredible ability to drive the music forward without speeding up. He made my job as a drummer so easy. He was impeccable, never put a foot wrong, and was a completely unique player. He’s sadly missed by everybody, especially Angus, his brother.”

Slade continued, “It must have been very difficult for Angus to move forward. Malcolm held that band together because of his playing and everything he brought to the band. They were called the greatest rhythm section ever, and it was Malcolm who made it that way. He was the driving force behind all of it.”

In addition, we talk more about Slade’s time in AC/DC, which he was a member of from 1989-1994, and then again in 2014-2016. We also discuss the recording process of AC/DC’s classic 1990 release “The Razor’s Edge.”
