Simon Wright Dispels Rumors About Angus Young and Yngwie Malmsteen on Fly on the Wall Tour

During an exclusive interview with Thomas S. Orwat, Jr. of the Rock Interview Series, former AC/DC drummer Simon Wright addressed a long-standing rumor about the band’s legendary lead guitarist, Angus Young. The rumor suggested that Young regretted choosing guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen to open for AC/DC during their 1985 “Fly on the Wall” tour, allegedly lamenting, “How do I follow this?”

When asked if having Malmsteen as an opening act was a concern for the band, Wright was quick to dispel the notion. “Not at all, no,” he stated emphatically. “You know, Angus is Angus and Yngwie is Yngwie, and never the twain shall meet. They play totally different styles. I mean, it’s, uh, it’s, uh, no, that never came up. He wasn’t worried about anything. Angus was never worried about anything.”

Wright’s comments put to rest any speculation about competition or tension between the two guitar icons. Instead, he highlighted the distinct musical approaches of Young and Malmsteen, underscoring that their differing styles complemented rather than conflicted with each other.

Simon Wright was in the AC/DC from 1983-1989, then went on to join DIO and later UFO.

Currently, Simon keeps the rhythm pounding with the Ronnie James Dio-sanctioned tribute band, Dio Disciples.

During this interview, Simon shares insights on Dio Disciples’ talking about the band’s recent performances and future plans,

In addition, Simon reminisces about his time with AC/DC, DIO, and UFO.
