Dario Lorina of Black Label Society explains the origin of the name of his new band Dark Chapel and his transition to lead vocals.

Dario Lorina, the talented guitarist known for his work with Black Label Society, Lizzy Borden, Jani Lane and instrumental solo records, is taking on a new challenge with his latest project, Dark Chapel. During a recent interview with Thomas S. Orwat, Jr. of the Rock Interview Series, Dario revealed the origins of the band’s intriguing name and shared his experience transitioning to the role of lead vocalist.

Who did Dario come up with the name Dark Chapel? Dario explained, “When I was looking for a place in Vegas, I found this place and, you know, you start looking at a handful of them and the nickname for it became like the Dark Chapel. So, that’s what I was just calling it. Then it became what I was calling the studio—the Dark Chapel. I have a big sign out here on the wall; it’s like this big Dark Chapel in cool, Gothic letters. So, when I was thinking of band names, that was one of the ones on the list that I had, and it just became the Dark Chapel. It fits perfectly with the band’s image and sound.”

Dario’s journey to becoming the lead vocalist for Dark Chapel is as fascinating as the band’s name. He has had a rich history of collaborating with notable artists like Jani Lane and Lizzy Borden, and releasing instrumental solo albums. Despite his extensive experience, stepping into the role of frontman was a new venture.

When asked about his transition to lead vocals, Dario shared, “I was never the front lead singer. When I was playing with Jani, he would say to me, ‘you’ve got to learn to sing and play slide guitar,’ joking around with me. After meeting Jani’s vocal coach, I started taking vocal lessons. It wasn’t something I focused on initially, as I was all about playing guitar. Over the years, I worked on my singing, writing songs, and demoing them.”

Dario’s perseverance paid off, and he felt that singing on Dark Chapel’s album was a natural progression from his instrumental work. He performed lead vocals live for the first time during Dark Chapel’s debut show a few weeks ago. Reflecting on this experience, he said, “I wasn’t really nervous because it feels the same as to what I’ve always done as far as since I’ve been playing out and touring. I’m just singing a few more words into the mic than just backup.”

Dario Lorina’s new project, Dark Chapel, is not just a band; it is a blend of his musical evolution and personal journey. With the upcoming release of their debut album, “Spirit in the Glass,” rock music fans can look forward to experiencing the diverse musical textures and powerful vocals that define Dark Chapel. The album is set to be released on February 28, 2025 on MNRK Heavy and promises to be a breakthrough release besides Dario’s already impressive repertoire.
