Welcome to Episode 119 of the Rock Interview Series, featuring the iconic guitar virtuoso Tracii Guns as our special guest. During our conversation, Tracii offered fresh insights into his personal journey as well as an intimate look at the band’s creative evolution and past history.
Released on Cleopatra Records on April 4, 2025, L.A. Guns’ 15th studio album, “Leopard Skin,” marks both a return to form and an innovative departure from previous works. The current lineup features founder Tracii Guns along with classic line-up vocalist Phil Lewis, and bassist Johnny Martin, guitarist Ace Von Johnson, and touring drummer Shawn Duncan.
When discussing the new release Tracii explained, “You know it was definitely a little bit of a left turn. It goes into some vintage rock sounds. It still maintains the high energy of the band. And of course, Phil—you know, I mean I can’t say enough good things about Phil. He just seems to be getting a little bit better every record.”
Tracii further reflected on the shift in the band’s recent musical direction: “I think it was really time to come up for some air. The past four records have been really heavy in mood, with a very strong classical influence and a more melancholic sound and emotion. We’d been so focused on pushing forward—making records, touring, taking care of the band—that it felt like time to do a celebration album, something along the lines of what we would soundcheck rather than what we normally play live.” During soundchecks, L.A. Guns embraces an experimental side by delving into heavy funk, R&B, and psychedelic blues, infusing their work with an organic, live-session energy that fans will recognize and appreciate.
This latest chapter in L.A. Guns’ journey not only honors their storied past but also boldly charts a path for the future—one where tradition and innovation coexist in electrifying harmony.
L.A. Guns start their USA tour starting on April 22nd.
