Welcome to episode #157 of the Rock Interview Series, recorded on October 1st, 2026. My guest for this episode is Vinnie Dombroski, vocalist and songwriter of the Detroit alternative rock band Sponge.
Sponge formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1992 and broke through with their gold‑selling debut studio record Rotting Piñata in 1994, featuring the hit singles “Plowed” and “Molly (Sixteen Candles).” Since then, Vinnie has kept Sponge moving forward through various lineups, consistently releasing material that preserves the style and spirit of the band’s classic sound.
Sponge will be releasing their 13th and possibly final record on October 2nd entitled “Recuerda Tu Muerte” which translates to ‘Remember Your Death.’ The band is also currently on a U.S. tour opening for Candlebox.
During this interview, we discuss the new record, the current tour, the band’s past history, their experience opening for KISS, Vinnie’s top five favorite records, his opinion of the Goo Goo Dolls performing “Plowed” on the Howard Stern show and much more.
