Lewiston, NY – The 2018 Artpark, “Tuesday in the Park” concert series kicked off last evening in rockin’ style, with the legendary rock music icon, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith! It was truly a night to remember for the 9000 plus, classic rock, music loving fans in attendance on this beautiful summer evening. As a matter of fact, this could be the best performance of any artist in the history of the Artpark summer concert series, since it’s inception over a decade ago.
Tyler, who turned 70 years old this year, is taking a break from The Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame inducted band – Aerosmith this summer, and performing with an exciting new, and incredibly talented Nashville, TN based band – The Loving Mary Band. This band consists of some incredibly talented musicians including: long time Aerosmith collaborator Marti Frederiksen -guitar, Rebecca Lynn Howard -bass, Suzie McNeil- harmonica , Elisha Hoffman – mandolinist/banjo, Andrew Mactaggart -guitar and Sarah Tomek -drums.
Tyler is the ultimate frontman, and other than Mick Jagger, no one even comes close. He has obviously somehow discovered the fountain of youth. His high energy and vocally perfect performance during his 90 set minute defied all the rules of nature for a 70-year-old man, especially one notorious for living many of his years in the fast lane.
In great spirits, Tyler jokingly interacted with his band members, crew and side stage entourage throughout the show. He was also very generous in allowing his band members to take center stage at various points during the performance. His band mate -famed songwriter, Marti Frederiksen had the spotlight for a moment, half way during the evening, when he performed an abbreviated version of the hit single, “Sorry” which he penned for sleaze rockers Buckcherry.
The setlist on this evening consisted of a crowd pleasing amount of classic Aerosmith songs, infused with a new and fresh country music twist. The highlights of this evening were without doubt the performances of the iconic classic tracks: “Sweet Emotion,” “Dream On” and “Walk This Way.” Tyler had the crowd, reliving the glory years of their youth as they passionately and loudly sang every word back to him.
Also, performed were a few tracks from Tyler’s critically acclaimed debut 2016 solo LP, “We’re All Somebody From Somewhere.” Tyler and band brought these songs, “My Own Worst Enemy,” and “Only Heaven” to a musically brilliant level live.
Tyler and band also included some spot on covers including: the Beatles, “I’m Down/”Oh Darling” and “Come Together,” (which Aerosmith recorded for the 1978 ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ movie) along with Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart,” and the evening’s closer Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.”
This truly was an amazing event! Tyler was truly phenomenal, and the Loving Mary Band proved to be the next best thing to Tyler’s mates in Aerosmith.
Tyler plans to return the focus of his career back to Aerosmith next year for what many are saying will be the bands last tour. It will be a bittersweet moment for fans. It will be another chance to see the greatest American band of all time, but very likely the last time as well.
